Yi Sun-sin

[1545–1598]

The most famous Korean admiral, whose services turned the tide of war during the Japanese invasion (1592–1598). A genius in naval tactics, he invented a highly effective warship of his own, the turtle boat, first ironclad warship in history. It was shaped like a tortoise and could fire flaming arrows into the thick of the enemy ships, and thereby won every sea battle. The admiral was also a gifted poet.

On the garrison tower,

In the moonlit Hansan Isle,

A great sword beside me,

I sit alone, sunk in sorrow.

Listen, a reed-leaf whistle in the dark—

It pierces my entrails; aye, they shake.
